Rome teen playing "chicken" killed by train

ROME, Ga. -
A 16-year-old boy is dead after police say he played a dangerous game of chicken with his friends.

Friends of Malik Cortez Johnson tell FOX 5 News that they were playing on the train tracks near East Calhoun Street in Rome just after midnight Sunday when he was struck and killed by a freight train.

Police say the teens were lying on the tracks as the train approached and were trying to jump up last minute, but Johnson did not make it.

Officials with Norfolk Southern say the train was traveling about 55 miles per hour at the time of accident. The locomotive had 42 cars on it at the time and it would have taken a mile and a half to stop.

Police believe the train conductor followed proper procedures.

Johnson was a student at Rome Middle School.
